Letter from the President

July 2009

For the 1st time in two decades I have taken back account management responsibilities. In doing so I’ve had the great fortune to work with buyers that I had previously only known in a peripheral manner as well as meet so many new buyers and in store staff. It’s been an incredible learning experience that I have thoroughly enjoyed! One of the many benefits has been to see first hand what is working at the retail level and what isn’t. While there are some stores doing a lot of things right and still struggling I have yet to see a store doing well that isn’t putting all or most of these points in action.

What’s working?

Going big, telling a story, having meaningful vendor partners & space commitments; when you become a destination location for a category or brand that has a consumer following you will attract new customers and they will come back on a regular basis.

In store events and Trunk Shows; there’s not enough room here to share the long list of Seasons and Reasons that you can plan fun things around to do in your store and that will be a compelling draw for people to come in to shop. Become a Sales Producers fan on Facebook to hear ideas and how to put them in action.

Web site, blogs, emarketing, Facebook and numerous types of advertising; the word advertising doesn’t have to equate to spending a lot of money. There are lots of ways to approach this – want some ideas, need some help? We’ll be sharing lots of them on our Facebook page!

See more sales reps! Because you may have cut back on your staff and find yourself working harder than ever you have less time to see sales reps and risk missing out on new vendors, products or categories that would make a positive impact on your business. While your budget may be narrow, keep your eyes and mind wide open to see what’s new and what’s retailing well in the marketplace. Rather than setting up appointments with salespeople you don’t know or that you don’t have confidence they have anything you want, block out a small amount of time every week or every other week to have an open buying period of time.

There’s always something new going on at Sales Producers and we don’t want you to miss out on anything! So we are providing you with lots of options to stay informed and if you wish to be interactive in discussions on a host of topics to help your business.

We’re living in what has been called an Economic Darwinism: Survival of the most adaptable, flexible & willing….join me in trying some new things as we reinvent ourselves and build a solid bridge leading us to a new decade!
