Letter from the President

July 2010

Who or what inspires you? Is there something or someone that drives you to dig deep within to bring on your most energized, creative and enthusiastic self to work? It’s so easy to fall into the rut of a routine – how do you climb out of yours?

I am so grateful that I found an exercise class and a teacher (who also owns the studio) that inspires me every time I take his class. Although I may drag myself there, I always leave feeling so excited to get to work and make something fantastic happen. Richard does more than teach an exercise class, he pushes those willing participants (key point there) to reach further in the class and in life, be the best we can be, step out of our comfort zones and break through the limiting boundaries we unconsciously set for ourselves. You don’t dare day dream or go on auto pilot even for a moment because that’s the precise second he glances over and by name calls you out “Bonnie, leg higher”. Part of you wants to scream back “if I could put it higher I would” but you know he wouldn’t say it if he didn’t think you could do it so…you lift higher and push harder. At the exact minute you begin to fade he’ll shout “winners never quit and quitters never win” and you simply have to choose to forge ahead stronger because you’re not a quitter.

People often comment to me that this class must be getting so easy now that I have been doing it awhile but it actually gets harder. In fact, Richard often points out that we never truly master anything because we can always learn something to tweak however so slightly that will help us do what we already do well even better. This is all so analogous to our business, just when you think you have a system in place, things are good and you’ve got the hang of it, something changes. It may be a downturn in the economy, a competitor, the loss of a key employee or customer, a once very hot item just isn’t so hot anymore ~ whatever it is we’re constantly tested to regroup and adjust to succeed.

So, back to where we began; who or what inspires you? Who or what motivates you to try something new or keeps you from doing the same old thing and expecting a different result? If no one or nothing comes to mind maybe it’s a good time to pick up a marketing or personal growth book, get involved in a local business organization or simply join us and others in our industry on Facebook where you will likely pick up new ideas plus have some fun!

I’m also inspired by so many of our retailers that have not only survived this downturn of our economy but have flourished. While it hasn’t been easy they have taken steps to build their business and drive more traffic into their store. I would like to highlight three of our accounts that are really excellent examples of the difference between those that “make things happen” and those that “wait or hope for things to happen.”

Urban Girls Accessories in San Diego, Webster’s Fine Accessories in Altadena and Kingfisher Road in Woodland Hills ~ All three use Facebook extremely effectively posting comments, new products & interesting tidbits about the store and the community regularly. In return each has garnered over 400 fans that are interactive and clearly enjoy their in-person and Facebook relationships with Annie, Lori and Kelly, the owners of these stores. Beyond Facebook, each has taken additional action such as joining local business organizations, sending regular emails, co-marketing with other local businesses, hiring a consultant and in general not doing what they always did before but assertively and tenaciously seeking new methods to grow their business. I find that so inspiring and hope you do too!
